DINOSAUR COMICS! and Father's Day

Well, in case the title of this here entry is throwing you off, it is Saturday and yes, it is not actually Father's Day. But today is when my family decided to celebrate it, what with all our busy schedules. I saw my bro Thad for the first time since Christmas! Yay. Him and I are actually going to hang out some time, which is cool.

It was me, Seb, Thad, Dad, and Grandma at Grandma's house and we had Oxtail (yessss) and rice and peas (yesss). It was awesome Jamaican food! It was one of the best times at Grandmas that I can remember since my parents get divorced. When my stepmom is around its never the same since of all the tension between her and my Grandma. But she wasn't there because she doesn't like Oxtail (okay, who doesn't like oxtail, seriously!?!?! haha) so it was kind of like the old family get together sans mom. I can't stress enough how awesome that was because what with changes in where im living, my job, my relationships, its just nice to know that you can go to Grandma's for dinner, start eating at say 4:30 then sit there and argue until 7.

I know that sounds funny, but its a very Jamaican thing to do: argue for well... the sake of arguing. Its all in good fun, i mean, at the time your just battling over a pointless topic (we covered education, motorcycle education, obesity, and spent about half an hour on convincing my grandma theres no real noticeable difference between a freeway and a highway, just to name a few topics.) I think its sort of developed in me a argumentative nature along with an inability to just drop a subject, because like I said we were there for like 2 and a half hours. Its a cultural thing you know, the idea that argument is bad or annoying. In some places in the world it is a way to spend time with others, to have fun. We all had good laughs throughout the whole get together. Not to say that I don't try to be less argumentative when not around Jamaican style family stuff, but maybe you can see why its a bit difficult. Sometimes I just don't understand why it bothers people, but then again I do understand how it would if you are not used to it. There we are sort of trying to get our points in, so we're all just trying to out voice one another and so if a non-family member were just onlooking it would look like we all hated each other or something.

My mom always told me this story of the first time she was a part of one of these get togethers, where my grandma and my step-grandpa (who i never met) and my dad along with some other jamaican relatives went into like world war III arguing over whether a tomato was a fruit or a vegetable. Afterwards my dad told her proudly that they only argue in front of you if they are comfortable around you and like you. It was sort of a "welcome to the family" to my mom, I think. I always thought that was neat.

Oh, my icon is from Dinosaur Comics...and I kind of think I might make all of my upcoming icons from Dinosaur Comics just because...they are SO AWESOME. Check em out, no really, check em out: http://dinosaurcomics.com
